What is a dental technician?
One of the professions that can be safely attributed to the concept of a dentist is a dental technician. Such a specialist is often confused with a dentist, but a master of this qualification does not personally meet with patients. Although there are exceptions, when a dental technician still performs dental manipulations (trying on) directly with the client.
What does a dental technician do?
A dental technician is engaged in the manufacture of dental prostheses, as well as the creation of maxillofacial apparatus, which, as a result, will be installed by a qualified orthopedic dentist already in the doctor’s office.
Most often, a good dental technician works in a special laboratory, where models and blanks of various prostheses and orthodontic devices are developed.
The work process of a dental laboratory can be organized according to several principles:
- when only 1-2 specialists work on the creation of one dental product
- when one apparatus or prosthesis is manufactured by a whole team, that is, the work is carried out according to the principle of manufactory.
Features of the qualification of a dental technician
A dental technician is a technical job. This work can be easily compared with jewelry practice or with the work of a watchmaker. Here, for example, in Europe, in particular among the Germans, a dental technician refers to workers who are engaged in precision mechanics. And today, dental masters of this type are well known:
1. with medicine;
2. with physics (to understand the physical processes that occur with metals at the time of casting);
3. with chemistry (be aware of chemical reactions that can be observed when several substances are combined);
4. with mathematics (calculation of the exact proportion of the necessary substances to create a multicomponent material);
5. with anatomy;
6. as well as with engraving, locksmithing and milling.
It is also worth noting that the Kyiv dental technician in his work uses 3-D graphics, welding skills and even some skills borrowed from an electroplating chemist.
The subtleties of the work of a dental technician
The work of a dental technician is, to put it mildly, specific, sometimes such a dental master has to work with radioactive and hazardous substances. For example, in artificial teeth, the ceramic component may have a negligible radioactivity charge. Indeed, in order to give the correct natural shade, uranium inclusions are added to the prostheses. The tools of the dental technician are different and multifunctional:

We can safely say that a dental technician is the right hand of an orthopedic dentist. It is this specialist who receives casts of future prostheses from the doctor, as well as data on the shape and color of the product. From the point of view of the patient, this manipulation does not cause any particular difficulties, but here the work of the dental technician is above all. After the impression gets to the laboratory, the dental master starts modeling. At the beginning, with the help of wax, an approximate model of the future device is cast. After the layout is created, it’s time to pour the product from nylon, metal or cermet (at the request of the client). There are cases when the face and jaw of the patient has individual characteristics, then the master dentist must personally see the client in order to more accurately display the external picture, there is also the possibility of creating a prosthesis from a photograph. When the product is ready, there comes a period of grinding and polishing, in addition, the technician equips the finished products with the necessary fasteners.
