What is a Dental Anesthesiologist?

An anesthesiologist is a medical specialist who ensures the safety of the patient during dental procedures. As you know, the pain syndrome present in the oral cavity is very difficult to tolerate. Modern medicine uses pain relief as a mandatory procedure that provides the most painless treatment. It is the anesthesiologist who is responsible and provides patients with medical anesthetics.

When is the help of a dental anesthetist indispensable?

Anesthesia in dentistry is used to temporarily relieve pain, or rather the sensitivity of tissues. Most often, anesthesia is used in surgical and therapeutic dentistry, in dental treatment and implantation.

Types of anesthesia:

1. General anesthesia – dentistry under anesthesia (all types of sensitivity lose their power) or dental treatment in a dream;

Features of the use of general anesthesia are diverse:

  • first of all, it is worth highlighting the fact that general anesthesia can only be used by those clinics that have the appropriate license, which is aimed at prosthetics and dental treatment
  • general anesthesia does not give complications if the patient has no contraindications to the use of this type of anesthesia
  • general anesthesia is used infrequently, although the patient’s desire is enough to use this method.

2. Local anesthesia – a decrease in sensitivity in a certain place.

This type of anesthesia is very popular, it is used in clinics most often, especially the effectiveness of the action stands out when:

  • treatment of dental canals
  • when dental manipulations are performed on the pulp, etc.

Painless dental treatment of this type has a duration of about an hour. The dentist anesthesiologist injects such a drug under the mucous membrane or intraosseously.

At the moment, modern dentistry practices both of the above methods. The anesthesiologist, starting from a pre-diagnosis and based on the individual characteristics of the patient, prescribes the type of anesthesia. Painless dental treatment   carried out immediately before treatment, each anesthetic drug is characterized by individual characteristics.

3. Application anesthesia – has the appearance of an ointment or spray.

The dentist anesthesiologist applies such a remedy with a cotton or gauze swab. The action of this drug is immediate.

Superficial anesthesia of this type is a local anesthesia used for:

  • the procedure for removing calculus from the teeth
  • when dental procedures are carried out at the very edge of the gum
  • when opening abscesses of the submucosal type
  • Also, the anesthesiologist can apply local anesthesia at the injection site before more global anesthesia.

4. Conduction and stem anesthesia – when the dentist prescribes an operation on a large molar or on the gum, it’s time to resort to conduction anesthesia. Such anesthesia helps to block the pain syndrome in a fairly large area of the oral cavity. The essence of such a drug effect is the uniform distribution of the anesthetic along the branches of the nerve (trigeminal).

The longest lasting analgesic effect can be achieved using stem anesthesia. The drug is injected into the base of the skull to block the nerves leading to the mandibular and maxillary regions.

Dental anesthesiologist advice:

Before visiting the dental office, the anesthesiologist advises you to pay attention to your own allergic manifestations and to notify the doctor without fail. If the patient has a single drug intolerance, then the doctor should know about it.
